Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program
The Hobson Wildenthal Honors College oversees the summer-specific Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP). This opportunity is open to all UT Dallas undergraduate students who have completed two or three years of study (rising juniors or seniors) to expand research and creative skills by working on a faculty member’s project. It is a lively intellectual experience for Honors College students, especially those considering graduate programs.
Students receive a $4,500 stipend, which is distributed in $1,500 installments, subject to satisfactory progress as determined by the faculty recipient. A student is expected to work for approximately 300 hours on the research/creative project. All students are required to present their summer research at the Summer Platform for Undergraduate Research (SPUR).
Guidelines for Faculty
Faculty in all academic disciplines are eligible to apply for these research apprenticeships. Faculty whose proposals are selected will receive a stipend to hire a student to work in the summer.
The Honors College will advertise the selected faculty proposals to Honors College students, but faculty are welcome to solicit applications from all rising juniors and seniors in their fields of study.
Participating faculty will interview applicants and select their apprentices, who are not required to be in the same school or department as the faculty member. Faculty do not receive additional compensation beyond having the student work on their research or creative project.
While the work that the research apprentice undertakes may be independent in nature, substantive oversight must be provided by the faculty member.
Students who have previously received funding through this URAP program are ineligible.
Faculty Application Procedure
Faculty wishing to apply should complete the URAP 2025 Proposal. Applications will start to be reviewed on Jan. 15, and notification of funding status will be sent on or before Jan. 31.
Student Application Procedure
Students must submit a resume and cover letter directly to the faculty member. Funded faculty members will interview applicants and select their apprentices by the end of February.
